Warning: Newham knife-point robberies may be linked

SEVEN ATTACKS ON WOMEN were committed in Newham between 19th July and 6th August – five of them involving a woman being robbed at knife point.

The victims were either sat alone in their cars or walking on their own. In five cases, the victim’s car was stolen. Three of the stolen cars have since been recovered.  Two of the female victims have been injured during the attacks (though not by the knives).

In each case, the robber demanded the victim hand over their phones and cash, and in five of the seven cases the robber has threatened the women with a knife. Each victim has described the man who robbed them as “a black man of slim build in his 20s or 30s.”

Police believe the offences are linked – but cannot yet confirm that there is only one suspect involved. A 32 year old man was arrested on 20th July in connection with the first offence. He was bailed until a date in mid-August while a police investigation continued.

Detective Constable Jon Forster from Newham CID said, “Thankfully none of the victims has been seriously injured during these robberies but the aggression shown by the suspect or suspects is of concern. We are carrying out extensive enquiries to identify who is responsible. Anyone approached and threatened while they are in their car should lock their doors and drive to a place of safety where possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101 or to call into Forest Gate police station. Police would also like to hear from any other women who have been attacked but not yet reported the incident. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111, where you can give information anonymously.
