Woman critical after Hackney cycle crash

A WOMAN PEDESTRIAN is in a critical condition in an East London hospital after she and a bicycle collided in Kingsland High Street. The incident happened just after 5pm yesterday – Tuesday, 28th August.

The woman, who is believed to be in her 50s, seems to have been trying to cross the road when the collision occurred.  Police, the London Ambulance Service and the air ambulance attended and she was taken to hospital, where she remains with life threatening injuries. Police are trying to trace her next of kin.

The cyclist was male. When he collided with the woman he came off his bike, but he left the scene of the accident soon after – apparently without even trying to call an ambulance. His bike was later found abandoned on Approach Close, N16. It is a specialized electric-assisted pedal cycle (mountain bike style) and is now in the hands of the police.

Detective Constable Darren Case, Serious Collisions Investigations Unit (SCIU) said, “This is a shocking incident […] We need to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time. Did you see the cyclist before, during or after the collision? Maybe you are in possession of dash cam footage or filmed the cyclist on your mobile phone as he made off. If you did it is vital that you make contact with us.

“We are also appealing directly to the cyclist, along with his friends and family who may know of his whereabouts, the pedestrian has suffered life threatening injuries as a result of this collision and it is important that you do the right thing and make contact with police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the SCIU at Chadwell Heath on 020-8597 4874 or via 101, quoting CAD 5837/28 August. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111, where you can give information anonymously.
