Community leadership training programme for E14 residents

QUEEN MARY University of London invites residents to take part in a free Community Leadership Training Programme where they will learn how to work with others to achieve change in their area.

The programme is for people who live, work or study in Poplar, Limehouse and the Isle of Dogs. It will focus on the issues linked to the huge amount of new building and development taking place in E14 and how local people can make their voices heard so that change benefits them.

Workshops will be led by lecturers from Queen Mary, and participants will have the opportunity to engage in a photography project and exhibition that will portray local people’s hopes and concerns for the future of the area. As part of the programme participants will also learn how to: negotiate with property developers; build relationships in their community; practice public speaking skills; and motivate others to take action. On top of this they will be able to connect with and develop a network of like-minded people in the community and learn about past activism in the area.

All participants will receive a certificate of accreditation from Queen Mary University (to help boost their CV and UCAS forms), and the programme is open to people from all backgrounds and all ages from 16 upwards.

Dates and times of the workshops are as follows:
Session One- Tuesday 25th April 6-8pm
Session Two- Saturday 6th May 11am-4:30pm
Session Three- Tuesday 9th May 6-8pm
Session Four- Saturday 20th May 11am-3:00pm
Session Five- Tuesday 23rd May 6-8pm
Session Six- Tuesday 11th July 6-8pm

All workshops will be held in venues (TBC) in Poplar, Limehouse and the Isle of Dogs, and food will be provided at each session. A free crèche will also be provided at every session for parents to bring their children.

An optional information session will be held on Wednesday, 19th April from 6-7pm, at 1Love Community Pop-Up Shop, 30 Marsh Wall, E14 9TP for people to drop in to ask any questions before committing to the programme.
