The Deputy Mayor – the only one that Mayor John Biggs has got left – was less shy than his boss and photos were taken to mark his reaction to what was largely very good news. He congratulated Central Foundation pupils and all the other pupils in the borough who were picking up their results.

The head teacher of Central Foundation Girls’ School, Esther Holland, was also full of congratulations, saying, “We are very proud of all our students and the hard work and they have put into achieving these fantastic results. This reflects the true commitment of all our staff and of the children and their families.”

Cllr Islam said, “Today is about all about our young people who have worked so hard for the last few years to achieve their grades and I congratulate all of them. As before, there are some outstanding results at individual schools across the borough with students who are a real credit to their school and their families.

“Many of the students are achieving these excellent results despite their families facing difficult circumstances and tough living standards. It’s a real testament to the determination and resolve of parents to ensure that their children receive a good education. We also need to pay tribute to the teachers and other staff in our schools for their own hard work and dedication in ensuring pupils achieve their full potential.  Our young people couldn’t do this without them.”
