Dignitaries turn out for WMYC

A WELL ATTENDED fundraising banquet has helped raise much needed awareness of the community activities of the Watford Muslim Youth Centre.

The programme was supported by sporting dignitaries such as ex-England fast bowler Kabir Ali; Ikram Butt, the former rugby league winger, who in 1995 became the first south Asian to represent England; and National Cricket League co founder Sajid Patel.

Patel was full of praise for the way the event was organised, saying, “We were invited by Gulfraz Riaz who is heavily involved with the youth centre project in Watford and is known for his contribution through the Club Cricket Conference (CCC) and National Asian Cricket Council (NACC). It was an inspirational evening and it was nice to see the contributions of UK Muslims in every aspect of civic society highlighted so well. Our strength remains in our diversity and our unity.”

The WMYC Trust was set up in 2012 with the aim of establishing a multi-purpose community centre in Tolpits Lane, Watford. The centre will be an interactive space offering a wide range of educational and recreational activities to people of all ages and backgrounds.

The WMYC are designing a state of the art facility to provide these services. However, the vision is not limited to bricks and mortar. WMYC will continue to be responsible for the facility once it is complete. With this in mind, WMYC are already designing services and activities to be implemented.

WMYC hope that the endeavours of the community will promote togetherness within Watford and help build bridges between various ethnic groups. By providing a safe environment where young people can have fun and learn, the centre will help shape the future of Watford while fulfilling the needs of the present.

The project will cost £2.5 million and so far £500,000 has been raised.
