UK/Bangladesh direct air cargo ban lifted

NEARLY TWO years ago, in March 2016, the UK Government suspended direct cargo flights to the UK, claiming that their decision was based on “security” reasons. Now the ban has been lifted.

When the ban first came in, the Bangladeshi Government engaged a UK company to advise on improving security. Boris Johnson visited Bangladesh earlier this month and hinted that the ban was close to being lifted.

The ending of the ban was formally announced at a press conference at the Hazrat Shahjalal International airport on 18th February. British High Commissioner Alison Blake said that there had been “significant progress” in meeting the UK Government’s security concerns.

Ms Blake expressed particular thanks to AKM Kamal, current Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister, and his predecessor Menon, as well as to officials in the relevant ministries and authorities who had overseen the improvements. She looked forward to continuing co-operation and friendship between the two countries.

The lifting of the ban will make trade easier between the two countries – both now and after Brexit.
